1. Foundation: Precision Installation and Alignment

The primary cause of "rough" motion in SCS systems is mechanical binding caused by misalignment.

  • Mounting Surface Quality: The base plate must be machined to a high flatness tolerance. If the mounting surface is warped, the housing of the SCS slide unit will be stressed when bolted down, causing the internal bearing balls to bind against the shaft.
  • Coaxiality and Parallelism: When utilizing two shafts, ensure they are perfectly parallel.   • Matching Shafting: Ensure the rail shaft is precision ground and induction hardened. A soft, non-hardened shaft will quickly develop "grooves" under the load of the ball bearings, leading to permanent roughness.

5. Systematic Maintenance Routine

A well-maintained motion system should not degrade over time:

  • Cleaning: Clean the shafting daily with a lint-free cloth and a light solvent (like isopropyl alcohol) to remove dust buildup.
  • Inspection: Periodically move the slider by hand with the drive motor disconnected. Any "grittiness" detected by hand signifies debris entry or bearing race damage.
  • Adjustment: Check bolt tightness after the initial 100 hours of operation, as settling may occur in the mounting interface.
